Image Concept for Night + Flash...
Stumbled upon a concept the other day. Lots of potential, but I need to perfect it. Any ideas? I'm thinking we need makeshift space helmets or something...
TANGENT: It never ceases to amaze me when people scoff at the fact that Nikon puts a pop-up flash on it's semi-pro camera bodies. The dang thing is SO useful! With a handful of new cameras from Nikon and Canon right around the corner, I have to say that this is one reason I prefer the Nikon D300 / D700 setup over any other setup, including the Canon 5D, it's theoretical replacement, (cause we're assuming they won't put a pop-up flash on it, let alone enable remote commanding) ...and even the Nikon D3, which does not have a pop-up flash. The Nikon D300 and D700 are in my opinion near-perfect for photojournalism / action etc.

But, I don't want to get too geeky on this blog. Suffice it to say that Photokina, one of the two largest annual photography conventions, is right around the corner, and excitement is building around all the new gear that we're going to see... Yay...
(If you sense a lack of enthusiasm, it might be because most ALL of this new gear will be high-end, and out of my gear budget for 2008... But all you big spenders out there, get your credit cards ready...)
Take care,

AWESOME matt!!
what a great idea you had. AND i'm glad mrs h got the flash back for you :) so much drama lol.post the 30 sec exposure 1 of you on top of this dome!
Makeshift space helmets are in order, for sure.
You kids rock it
Haha we gotta restage that shoot but with climbing gear.
I <3 the built-in pop-up flash.
I love this idea.. and though it needs some fine tuning it's still awesome as of now... lol just get some tinfoil.. or skater helmets and put tinfoil on them.. nice work matt.. as always.
Hey, just curious, I know you put research into finding the right photography site, don't know if you use smugmug still, just curious as to which is most easily setup and personalizable (is that a word??)
Also, have you ever seen any of those flash soft box type things? They seem to be a mini softbox that fits over a flash, whether it be pop up or add on I am not sure.. Anyway, worth the money? Any other quick/simple/cheaper fixes for enhancing candid portraits?
Thanks a bunch
WOW.... that is VERY super cool!!! However, since I am not a photo guru, I really have nothing to offer as far as fine-tuning
very cool concept man! and i second the spacehelmet photo. i think that would make for a really awesome shot.
Thats awesome... I'm hoping Nikon releases a new 70-200 soon... I still have the 80-200silent wave.. no VR... I want to buy the VR but I keep hoping for a new one...
pop-up flash is personal preference. I can't say that I miss it from the D3 because I just bump up the ISO. But I was at the beach about two weekends ago with the D300 and had to take a huge group picture so with CLS I had extra light along with an SB-800 to cover the group. Putting down pop up flash because it isn't professional is dumb. I did wish the D3 had a focus assist lamp though, focusing in the dark gets a bit hairy. I've spent my all my photography funding for the next two years since I have been back in the states. If Nikon announces some AF-S primes then I am going to have to start taking out loans.
@broccardophoto - For DX shooters, the current 70-200 is the ultimate. It is amazingly sharp on the DX frame, and smaller / lighter than it WILL be when Nikon updates it for FX. Of course if you want to shoot FX, you'll really need the new one if you want sharp corners, and I'm sure the lens will cost $1800-$2000... Personally however, I'm addicted to the miniscule size / weight of the Sigma 50-150 or the Canon 70-200 f/4 series lenses...

@haison_photography - Exactly, which is why the D700 is the best of both worlds! If Nikon comes out with some new lenses you really want, just trade down for the D700 and presto, you've got a grand or more to spend... (and a pop-up flash!)
Oh and for AF in the dark, I THINK the SB900 can assist a lot better than the SB800 can? I'm not sure if it can assist in continuous focus, but THAT would allow you to focus with total accuracy in complete darkness...

Yep, I still use and love SmugMug. For hobbyists, they are the best thing out there. (Of course also consider "zenfolio", the SmugMug knock-off...)
For professionals, they still have a few drawbacks, but I'm nice and settled in so I'm gonna stick with SmugMug indefinitely I think.

You're my hero with flash photos, you know that right Matt?
Well, until I look @ Strobist
I definitely could see space helmets. Get some daft punk style in there... sweet.
Very nice use of the playground. I like it!
coneheads
That looks very cool! Creative Matt!
Need to get my aluminum hat...
Hey, I love the second photo. The bright light and the line of her body is just perfect
@Bluehair7 - Thank you! (And thank HER for perfect lines, not me...
